Yablo Sequences in Truth Theories
نویسنده
چکیده
We investigate the properties of Yablo sentences and formulas in theories of truth. Questions concerning provability of Yablo sentences in various truth systems, their provable equivalence, and their equivalence to the statements of their own untruth are discussed and answered.

Gödelizing the Yablo Sequence
We investigate what happens when ‘truth’ is replaced with ‘provability’ in Yablo’s paradox. By diagonalization, appropriate sequences of sentences can be constructed. Such sequences contain no sentence decided by the background consistent and sufficiently strong arithmetical theory. If the provability predicate satisfies the derivability conditions, each such sentence is provably equivalent to ...
متن کاملElement of justification in contemporary epistemology
The definition of propositional knowledge has been said to be: "knowledge is belief in justified truth" and belief, truth, and justified are necessary and adequate conditions in the actualization of knowledge. Many faults have been directed towards this three elemental definition, which some of them have been derived from the element of justification. This article reviews some of the most im...
متن کاملMinimalism, Deflationism, and Paradoxes∗
This paper argues against a broad category of deflationist theories of truth. It does so by asking two seemingly unrelated questions. The first is about the well-known logical and semantic paradoxes: Why is there no strengthened version of Russell’s paradox, as there is a strengthened version of the Liar paradox? Oddly, this question is rarely asked. It does have a fairly standard answer, which...
متن کاملNew Zeno and Actual Infinity
In 1964 José Benardete invented the “New Zeno Paradox” about an infinity of gods trying to prevent a traveller from reaching his destination. In this paper it is argued, contra Priest and Yablo, that the paradox must be resolved by rejecting the possibility of actual infinity. Further, it is shown that this paradox has the same logical form as Yablo’s Paradox. It is suggested that constructivis...
متن کاملOn Gupta-Belnap Revision Theories of Truth, Kripkean fixed points, and the next stable set
We consider various concepts associated with the revision theory of truth of Gupta and Belnap. We categorize the notions definable using their theory of circular definitions as those notions universally definable over the next stable set. We give a simplified (in terms of definitional complexity) account of varied revision sequences as a generalised algorithmic theory of truth. This enables som...
